Day 2 - South of Paris to Mirepoix

Saturday 6 September 2008

The early hours of Saturday morning saw us continuing our dash south, heading towards my French retreat near Mirepoix in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Nick took a long stint down past Orleans, Vierzon, Limoges and Chateauroux to the outskirts of Toulouse. Heavy rain too, with the Beast resembling a barge on a canal at times the surface water was so bad.

In order to stay awake frequent stretch breaks were required, during which we brewed up using our faithful mini stove - Here a still smiling Wedgi (me) is pictured waiting patiently for the bloody thing to boil!

We arrived at Mirepoix at around 7.15am, and having stocked up on croissants continued to the house at Les Senies. 753 miles from Forest Row covered without incident, although headlights and wipers continued to be mercurial.

Dull and overcast, the weather changed to a drizzly rain which did not let up all day. Still managed a 90 minute ride out in preparation for later feasting. The evening began as it would end in a bar with a well earned libation or several!

We stuffed ourselves to excess in between the bar visits with a multi course Medieval banquet washed down with an aperitif and Vin rouge.

The full medieval experience - goblet and gout included!

D Day .... Forest Row to South of Paris

Friday 5 September 2008

Preparations complete, tearful goodbyes said to loved ones, last minute will changes made meant that when the afternoon of Friday 5 September 2008 came around we were ready to begin our European tour in the grand old tradition. Setting off from Forest Row in Sussex (start mileage 55,974) we made it all of 10 miles before pulling over for the first of many petrol stops - This was soon to become an all too familiar sight to our wallets:

Refueled we headed down to Dover and our ferry crossing with Sea France, a light drizzle highlighting the errant nature of the Beast's wipers. The crossing of the channel was not as rough as we were fearing. We started as we intended to go on, with a hearty meal washed down with a fine Mouton Cadet.

We docked at Calais around 8.30pm French time and headed south towards Paris at a regal 80mph. 291 miles after filling up we put another 67 litres in, meaning an interesting average of 18 miles to the gallon!. Midnight came up with around 300 miles done and the infamous Peripherique negotiated successfully.

Preparation expenses and tour equipment

Aside from the purchase cost of the Beast, we delved into our less than deep pockets for the following before we had even set off:

Service - £304
Tyres - £142
Fuses/bulbs/oil - £42
Cover - £40
Fire extinguisher - £7
Chrome exhaust tips - £10 - From Lidl for that performance look!
New CD/radio - £100
Tour stickers - £20

Total - £665

Amongst the essential tour equipment secreted in the car we had:

First aid kit - mainly for hangovers
Headlight adaptors
M and S mint humbugs
Portable electric cool box
Mini stove, saucepan, mugs, tea and coffee
Torch
2 folding chairs
RAC Sat Nav - totally useless!
Jump leads
2 spare tyres
Trolley jack
Various tools
Spare bulbs
Latex gloves???!!!!!
WD 40

Travelling light was definitely not an option!

RS4 v Subaru Impreza... no contest

On the way home tonight came upon an older Impreza Turbo pushing on a bit - Took childish pleasure in completely wasting him on the Chelwood Gate straight across the Ashdown Forest without even having to drop out of 5th. There is no replacement for displacement as they say!

New beast on the block ... V8 heaven

Am now a bit happier as have taken delivery of the replacement for the poor old Beemer - A lovely Audi RS4 with the fabulous sounding V8 pumping out 414bhp. I am still getting used to it as it is quite different to the twin turbo diesel of the BMW 535. It revs all the way to 8,000 and my o my does it have some shove when the revs rise. It also has fantastic winged seats which hug you closer when the sport button is pressed!
